Vote “no” on Multnomah County capital gains tax, Measure 26-238: A proposal to create a new capital gains tax for funding legal aid for those facing eviction is an inefficient, poorly written, untested way to fund a program that can be paid for with existing homeless services tax revenue.

Derrick Peterson has withdrawn from this race. We are no longer endorsing him. Derrick Peterson for Portland Public Schools Zone 3: Voters should elect Derrick Peterson, who aims to improve students’ access to mental health resources, to the Zone 3 seat for the board overseeing Portland Public Schools.

Vote “yes” on Portland Children’s Levy, Measure 26-240: Portland voters should renew the Portland Children’s Levy, which has delivered on its promises of investing in effective programs for children with transparency and accountability.

Julia Brim-Edwards for Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, District 3: Julia Brim-Edwards’ detailed diagnosis, methodical strategizing and persistence in follow-through make her the best pick for the District 3 seat on the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners.

Oregonian editorials

Editorials reflect the collective opinion of The Oregonian/OregonLive editorial board, which operates independently of the newsroom. Members of the editorial board are Therese Bottomly, Laura Gunderson, Helen Jung and John Maher.

Members of the board meet regularly to determine our institutional stance on issues of the day. We publish editorials when we believe our unique perspective can lend clarity and influence an upcoming decision of great public interest. Editorials are opinion pieces and therefore different from news articles.
